Glagolitic script in Vrbnik island Krk Croatia


The history of Vrbnik is noted in old Glagolitic scripts and documents.  The Glagolitic alphabet or Glagolitsa is the oldest known Slavic alphabet. Between the numerous cultural monuments in Vrbnik the constitution "Vrbnicki statute" (1388) and the decorated mass book "Vrbnicki missal" from the year 1642 should be emphasized, both in the old-Croatian Glagolitics letters.

The most prominent feature is the Renaissance altar of St. Mary of the Roses. The collection of ancient manuscripts and Glagolitic documents are housed at the parish church in Vrbnik.

Vrbnik's Wheel

In front of the church's entrance there is the "Vrbnik's Wheel", a circle built-up of pebbles and divided into eight parts. From these parts all Glagolitic letters may be derived.

The library with about 15,000 books, has the collection of the Glagolitic manuscripts, from the 14th and 15th century, and a few incunabula. The most famous are the first illuminated Vrbnik Missal from the 15th century and the Atlas Johann David Kohlers "Atlas scolasticus at itinerarius" from 1718.

Vrbnik Krk Croatia - history


Vrbnik on island Krk was inhabited since prehistoric times. Vrbnik was first mentioned in 1100. In the Middle Ages was Vrbnik a fortress of the Frankopan family and in 1388 it got the statute written in Glagolitic script. In 13th and 14th century the Frankopans were one of the most powerful aristocratic families in Croatia. The family Frankopan had in Vrbnik two houses; the "Ducal Palace" and the "Baca's house". In front of the church is the main square with the Ducal Palace. The  "Baca's house" with  many interesting architectural details is in the street Glavaca, in the old town.

KRK - principal town of the island Krk


The principal town of the island Krk, surrounded by forests, lies in a beautiful bay on the wind-protected western side of the island. The calm island life characterizes the port during the day and in the restaurants, bars and Cafs at the promenade develop their brisk art of life. The objects of interest of the city Krk:
  • The most important object of interest of Krk is the cathedral, originally a Roman Basilica from the 6th century. The today's three-aisle cathedral from the 12th century with the bell tower from the 16.-18th century was rebuilt several times in its history.

  • Kamplin place: there is a Frankopan castle, which served for the defence of the city in the Middle Ages as well as the Frankopan court, which was in use since the 12th century.

  • Small town-gate, which was mentioned already in 1398, the only gate that leads directly to the city harbour.

In the summer months many artists and ensembles appear as guests in the city. To the tradition belong the celebration of the St. Quirinius, the summer festival of Krk, as well as the fair of Krk (at the beginning of August). The most of events take place in the free or in the historical places: in the cathedral, in the atrium of the Franciscan monastery in Krk and Kosljun and in the castle of the family Frankopan.

 

Punat / Island Kosljun


If you make a trip, you should also visit the small island Kosljun in the bay of Punat. On the island there is a Franciscan monastery with numerous valuable objects, which were collected by centuries and are presented there today. There is also an ethnographic collection. On the small island over 500 plant types are registered.

Baska - island Krk Croatia


Baska, town and port on the south-eastern coast of the island of Krk is the most well-known tourist centre on the island Krk. The pictorial valley, the rich cultural heritage and the beautiful 2 km long beach, contribute to the extraordinary attractiveness of this place. The 2 km long fine pebble beach of Baska is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Adria and is particularly suitable for non-swimmers and children.
Places of cultural significance include the church of the Holy Trinity, situated in the old town centre. It is the largest church of Baska and its environment. It was built in the baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. Near the church there is also a local history museum, which contains an ethnographic collection of the whole environment.

In Jurandvor on island Krk, about 1.5 km before Baska, there is the church St. Lucija and the remainders of the Benedictine monastery. In this small church the "board of Baska"  (Bascanska ploca), the oldest Croatian writing document (in Glagolica) from 11th. century was found.

Silo - island Krk Croatia


Silo is a quite little place in northern part of the island Krk which attracts an increasing number of visitors.
Silo is situated in a wide bay and protected from southern and eastern winds by a long promontory.

Since the year 2008 a blue European flag is standing on the beach "Pecine" (sand and pebble), as an indication of the first-class beach and water quality.

Cave Biserujka - island Krk Croatia


The cave "Biserujka" (biser in Croatian means a pearl) is a cave near Dobrinj on island Krk (12 km from Vrbnik). According to a legend, smugglers hide a pearl treasure in the cave. The cave with its rich galleries filled with numerous stalactites, stalagmites and calcine pillars is 110 m long. The cave temperature is between 10 and 13 C all year round.
